USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70) is the third Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier. Commissioned in 1982, the ship is named for Georgia Congressman Carl Vinson, a longtime chairman of the House Naval Affairs and Armed Services committees.
